Interview with Mika Aaltola

by | Dec 10, 2024

As a follow-up to our earlier analysis about then commissioner-to-be Henna Virkkunen, we have conducted an interview with Finnish EPP MEP Mika Aaltola, to get a more precise view about the candidate.

1. What do you think about Virkkunen, her expertise, and professional qualities?

Virkkunen is not only a colleague but also a close friend. She brings decades of experience at both the national and European levels, including her time as a minister. Her expertise and professional qualities are beyond question. Finland and Europe will gain an outstanding commissioner in her.

2. What are the personal and political goals of Virkkunen in the 2024-2029 cycle?

The focus must align with the priorities of European citizens. In these increasingly uncertain times, the EU needs to demonstrate its ability to deliver when needed and to step back when appropriate. Key goals include fostering investment, simplifying regulations, and ensuring decisive political action. As democracy faces mounting challenges and rapid technological changes raise serious concerns, it is essential to adopt a long-term perspective guided by a comprehensive strategy. This is the overarching vision for the 2024-2029 cycle.

3. Will Virkkunen try to slow down overregulation and focus on implementation?

The priority is to reduce excessive and overly complex regulations that stifle economic growth and entrepreneurship, often pushing investment to competitors like the United States. For a diverse region like the EU, with its varying cultures and practices, the focus must be on creating straightforward, practical laws that simplify lives and support businesses, rather than adding unnecessary complexity.

4. How could the EU compete against the United States and China?

The EU already possesses the tools and proposals to enhance its competitiveness. Reports from leaders like Letta, Draghi, and Niinistö provide clear and actionable strategies to strengthen economic security, drive growth, and improve regional competitiveness. What’s needed now is political pragmatism and a commitment to implementation. By working together, focusing on core challenges, and avoiding divisive politics, the EU can demonstrate that democracy delivers. This will ensure that the EU remains competitive on the global stage.

5. In practice, how significant a role can democracy play in Virkkunen’s portfolio?

Democracy will play an essential role. The challenges it faces today from autocrats and despots are the most significant in decades. Virkkunen’s portfolio has both a practical and symbolic dimension: practically, by upholding democratic standards and values, and symbolically, by sending a clear message that leaders like Putin cannot operate without accountability. Supporting democracy remains a top priority.

6. What would be the division of labour between Virkkunen and McGrath?

The aim is for a logical and efficient division of responsibilities. While the specifics will become clearer over time, it is important to allow the new Commission the necessary space to organize itself and define roles effectively.
